Initial conference with defendant; information checklist

During the initial conference with the defendant, counsel will want to ascertain the following facts:

  • Client's name
  • Home address
  • Business address
  • Home and business telephone numbers
  • Occupation
  • Criminal record, if any
  • Name and address and phone number for spouse, significant other, parent, etc.
  • Name of alleged victim of substantive crime
  • Time and place of alleged crime
  • Whether client has given a statement to the police
  • Names, addresses, and phone numbers of client's next of kin
  • Time and place of next court appearance
  • Whether bail has been set
  • Names of alleged codefendants
  • Names, addresses and telephone numbers of any witnesses client may be aware of
  • Social security number
