Computer hardware

The widespread use of computer chips has led to a number of difficult questions in the definition of hardware. Maryland, for example, excludes from its definition of "computer" the following: "an automated typewriter or typesetter, a portable calculator, or any computer that: is designed, manufactured, and used exclusively for routine personal, family or household purposes and is not used to access, communicate with, or manipulate any other computer."FN31
