At common law there were, of course, no consideration of crimes involving computers. With its historic flexibility, however, the common law has provided sanctions for many types of computer crime.[[FN7]] In fact, many computer crime cases have been successfully prosecuted pursuant to state common-law provisions. Analogously, a number of widely publicized cases considered "computer crimes" have been prosecuted pursuant to federal proscriptions of interstate transportation of stolen property,[[FN8]] theft of government property,[[FN9]] mail and wire fraud,[[FN10]] and embezzlement.[[FN11]]
